Our History
- How we got started
The following is an excerpt of a letter from our founder
and first president, Mrs. Barbara Hunt, telling how the idea
for Women's
League started in 1969.
Lake
Highlands was growing...But
we had no central source of community focus - no community
government;
no town bank, no city hall, no recreation center. We
needed a group to filter information and to address the
needs of the
area - not to interfere with the PTA, church or garden
groups but to support the community
by promoting
civic, cultural and social events. My idea was to put
together a group of women
who were aware of the needs and activities in all areas
of Lake Highlands. I invited 10 women to meet in my home
to discuss
such an organization. We each went home from the meeting
with information to gather and ideas to reflect upon.
Two weeks later we met again...
At that time we each took an office, chose a
name for the group and began to prepare bylaws and aims.
At the
third meeting we were to invite guests. Five new people
were present and of that number four joined the original
ten, and
the league was formed. On that day the flower bloomed,
and it still grows. Most of the charter members are now
sustaining
members. We are proud of what we started, and we watch
your progress with loving interest and encouragement.
